idea #22 - challenging fact
Willie Smitt's TED talk has been challenged. TED allowed the challenger, Eric Meijaard to write a letter and for Willie Smitts to write a response. Both letters can be found here:
http://www.ted.com/pages/williesmitschallenged This is a great opportunity for debate in the classroom on the ideas of supporting claims, in particular it might be used in a TOK lesson. |
IDEA #23 - Hold a concert or event to raise funds and awareness
At my school we have a big concert every year. It includes student bands, teacher bands we even had local Hong Kong bands and dancers.
The event should be student led and organised. The students made displays on our chosen charities one of which was the Masarang. We arranged a live Skype interview with Willie Smitts. |
IDEA #24 - Start a masarang extra curricular activity
|
At our school we have two Masarang clubs, one in primary and one in secondary. The secondary one is student led. They aim to take every opportunity to educate the rest of the school about the Masarang. They sell Masarang sugar at school events. They raise the profile of the Masarang at every opportunity for example in the school newspaper and they do idea #25.......

idea #25 GO there!
The facilities (student accommodation, food, transportation) at the wildlife centre are very good. Our students go to Indonesia every year as part of CAS.
The Masarang also depends on volunteers - it's a great gap year option. It's mucky but rewarding work!!
|
If you do get a chance to go we made our students make short films - the document below lists the topics they worked on.
Here are two short films made by my students on the most recent trip to Indonesia. They give an idea of the kind of things they get up to while they are there.
